PHX for the Superbowl

It’s been a while since we’ve visited Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, but now’s a great time to revisit and review PHX for the Superbowl. Whether you’re a PHX local, or just passed through PHX for the Superbowl, you’ll love the Southwest inspired art, architecture, shopping and dining that this airport has to offer. In fact, many PHX locals visit PHX Sky Harbor just for the shopping – there’s a great pre-security shopping mall area in the main terminal that is an attraction for more than just travelers (if this doesn’t scream Airports 2.0, we don’t know what does!). These are just a few of the reasons why we’re planning to include PHX in the tripchi airport app, not to mention that the place to go is….PHX for the Superbowl!

If you are actually traveling through PHX for the Superbowl this weekend, keep an eye out on the PHX Website for tips and tricks to make your passage through the airport as seamless as possible. The good folks at Sky Harbor have even set up a special page for Superbowl visitors – check it out here. In particular, there’s some great advice on rental cars (reserve your car in advance for guaranteed availability), since there will be a 50% spike in rentals at PHX for the Superbowl. Similarly, there’s a guide on using public transportation from the airport and to the stadium if you aren’t able to get that rental car.

PHX expects the busiest day of travel during the Superbowl weekend period to be on Monday, Feb 2 (the day after). As such, expect above average security wait times so leave yourself plenty of time to check-in, or take advantage of Pre-Check if you’re flying the following airlines:

  • Air Canada
  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • JetBlue Airways
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Sun Country Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • US Airways

Post-security, we have several #layovertips for you to spend your time as you’re waiting to board your flight and depart PHX for the Superbowl weekend behind you.

We love the Southwestern vibe throughout PHX. Why not take advantage of some local favorites why you wait? If your palette craves some authentic Mexican food (and some tequila), why not head over to Blanco Tacos & Tequila? This place is one of our favorite #layovertips at PHX Sky Harbor.

Not a spicy food fan? Another one of our favorite restaurants to try when we’re passing through is Olive & Ivy – located at Terminal 4 near the A gates – which also has a location in downtown Scottsdale. It serves up a solid Mediterranean menu and also offers a to-go option. This is a place we actually would recommend going to outside of the airport – so why not take a little bit more of Phoenix with you before you fly out?

If you need to kill some time pre-security, or are waiting to meet the rest of your party or pick up a friend, head to Terminal 4 Level 3 for a large selection of shopping and dining. One of our favorite options to wait for friends and family at is Sauce, a pizzeria and wine bar.  Sauce

As far a unique, local gifts and souvenirs, PHX also has you covered. If you’re at PHX for the Superbowl you will want to check out the The Team Shop sports apparel store in the same Terminal 4 Level 3 mall area (pre-security). But, if you’re looking for local handicrafts with a Native American and Southwest flair, make sure to spend some time in Indigenous, located in Terminal 4 after the A security checkpoint.

After shopping and dining, PHX still has plenty more to deliver to help you spend your time. If you’re traveling with a family, then you know that when the kids are happy, you’re happy. Be sure to swing by the children’s play area in the International B Gates area of Terminal 4.

If you’re traveling alone and you want to treat yourself, the shoeshine services at PHX are some of the best we’ve seen at any airport.

Our final #layovertip to take in some snackable art at the many museum exhibits scattered throughout PHX Sky Harbor (at each corner of Terminal 4 Level 3 pre-security mall). New exhibits are always coming through, so chances are each time the next time you visit PHX, you’ll see something different.

As always, we’d love to hear from you about your travel experience through PHX for the Superbowl (or during any other time for that matter). Shoot us a note or leave a comment below, and we’ll get back to you!
