Flight Review: Southwest 659 and 514 ORF-BWI-BOS

Background and Ticketing

I bought these tickets as part of a return leg from a wedding in Maryland and a week in sunny Virginia Beach, VA. When I fly back to BOS from the Hampton Road area I have a choice of two airports, Norfolk International Airport (ORF) and Newport News International Airport (PHF). Richmond’s Byrd International Airport (RIC) is also an option but it is an hour and half from VA Beach. Southwest and US Airways Express offer the lowest priced option from ORF and Delta Connection from PHF. Before the merger of Southwest and Airtran there was a direct flight between BOS-PHF on a Boeing 717 which began my love for that aircraft that I blogged about here. I miss that flight as it was direct, no fee for a checked bag, on a 717 and never full. This time I went with Southwest out of ORF connecting in BWI as they had the lowest price at $94 and I could check a bag for free. I rarely ever check a bag on short flights but this time I wanted to throw caution to the wind, it almost can back to bite me. I also would much rather fly on a 737 instead of cramming into a CRJ on US Air and I wanted to continue building my Southwest rapid rewards points.20141021_200546 (2)

Arriving in Bujumbura

It was a 30 hour journey from LAX to BJM (Bujumbura, Burundi) that started at 2230 Dec 26 and ended at 1500 Dec 28. Somehow we lost a day in there due to the time change and the 13 hour flight from IAD – ADD (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). All told we have 4 flights: LAX – IAD; IAD – ADD; ADD – KGL (Kigali, Rwanda); KGL- BJM.

I waved goodbye to my parents and my grandfather and I set off to LAX.

Bye Bye LA

Flight Safety Videos Get Funny

Not only are we entering the age of Airport 2.0, where airports are improving (at least in terms of food and retail concepts), now in-flight safety videos (you know, those ones you HAVE to watch with your undivided attention prior to take-off) are also improving.

Namely, they are getting funny.  Airline marketers are finally realizing that the best way to sell boring content is to make it interesting (read: not boring).

It’s Not Cheating (If it’s in a Different Airport Code)

By Adam Bush

Recently on a boys’ trip to KRK (Krakow), I had an almost six hour layover at IAD (Dulles).  This was mostly by choice since I would rather spend extra time at the major hub airport than be delayed at my home airport of ORF (Norfolk) and lose a day flying overseas because I missed a connection.

tripchi goes international at Boston Logan

Getting around Boston Logan for international travel has always been a little more difficult than other airports.  Terminal E seems overextended and difficult to manage (it’s not the friendliest).  You can have problems trying to find a place to sit down and security lines can back up for hours; once you get through security, however, there are plenty of interesting options of things to do around this international terminal.

Boston Logan ABCs

Getting around Boston Logan has always been pretty easy but the idea of using the airport as a place to relax, eat, and shop before a flight might not seem as intuitive. Last time I was up there I had the unexpected “opportunity” to chill out for almost 4 hours because of a flight delay. As you can imagine, I was pretty annoyed, but there frankly wasn’t much I could do about it.  I was not exactly sure what, or for how long, the delay was going to go on for, so I made the best of a bad situation. I used the extra time to explore the airport, and was actually able to get around to two different terminals, A and C.
